The browser extension

LinkScan checks links when you start a scan. It sends requests from your browser to the linked sites without your cookies. Those sites receive the requests and your network address. URLs, link text, scan history and results stay in Chrome's local extension storage; they are not sent to us. The extension has no analytics or tracking.

Checks send at most two requests a second, with one request to each site at a time.

It uses activeTab and scripting to read and locate links on the page you choose, sidePanel for its interface, storage for results and settings, and webRequest to observe redirects from its own checks. Access to sites is optional and requested when you scan; you can revoke it in Chrome's extension settings.

Use Clear all data in Settings to remove stored results and settings. The confirmation offers Export first; nothing is deleted until you choose Clear and continue. The first release also provides Delete page in History and Clear this domain in Domains. These remove that page's saved data and locations; shared link records remain while another page uses them. Pages and links expire according to the extension's retention rules.

The website

When enabled on linkscan.app, Google Analytics measures page visits, visits to missing pages and clicks through to the Chrome Web Store. An install click is a referral, not proof that you installed the extension. Google Analytics can use cookies and receive technical information such as device and browser details. Advertising signals and personalization are disabled in our tag.

Our tag sends known page paths and button locations. It removes query strings and fragments, reduces external referrers to their origin, and groups unknown or missing addresses as /404/ instead of sending arbitrary URL contents. Local development and draft previews do not send analytics. Website analytics do not receive the pages or links you scan in the extension.

The site is hosted on Netlify, which receives requests needed to serve it. Contact form submissions go through Netlify and include the details you submit. Support links open Buy Me a Coffee; the support widget script is not loaded on this website.
